If the model layer is commoditizing, why do the two frontier labs post the fastest revenue ramps in tech history?

Victoria Arinstein3 min read

July's story was cheap intelligence (possibly) breaking the old moats, and the market repricing violently around it.

A wall of open-weight releases pulled open models to within one release cycle of the closed frontier. This force amplified "broken capex" worries and cracked the chip complex: the semi ETF sold off around 20% during the month.

Underneath it, China is pressing the commoditization across three fronts: open models, lithography and memory.

Yet the labs themselves are anything but commoditized on revenue: Anthropic is reportedly breaking through ~$70B ARR, while OpenAI is on pace for ~$75B, both at 80%+ gross margins.

Private market: no correction — at least, not yet

In private markets, we don't see the pricing correction. The LBX25 rose ~2% in July, while the S&P 500 was flat and the Nasdaq-100 fell 7%. Private marks held while public tech wobbled.

But "held" doesn't mean "moved together." Neither the public nor the private Mag 7 traded as a monolith:

Notably, the names driving the LBX25 higher weren't the semis-and-AI story at all. July's top contributors:

Anduril +20.3% → +0.81 pp (defense)

Ayar Labs +19.0% → +0.76 pp (optical interconnect)

Databricks +12.8% → +0.51 pp (data/AI)

Kalshi +9.0% → +0.36 pp (prediction markets)

ClickHouse +8.0% → +0.32 pp (data infrastructure)

Where the money is moving

Pricing corrections take months to show up in private markets. Activity moves faster — and in July the activity shifted toward Robotics and CloudTech & DevOps

New Stars

Companies drawing fresh secondary interest this month:

Positron US-made AI inference chips pitched as an energy-efficient Nvidia alternative. Reportedly raising up to $750m at a ~$5bn valuation, roughly 5x its ~$1bn February mark.

Innovaccer Healthcare data and agentic-AI platform for US health systems. Crossed $200m ARR in 2026, on an IPO track.

xLight Gelsinger-chaired startup building a free-electron-laser EUV light source to break the ASML lithography bottleneck. Reportedly raising ~$350m.

FluidStack Neocloud GPU builder, 100k+ GPUs, customers include Mistral, Poolside and Anthropic. Anchored by a ~$50bn Anthropic capacity deal. Closed an $830m Series A in July at a $7.5bn valuation.

Stoke Space Developing Nova, a fully reusable medium-lift rocket positioned as the alternative to SpaceX, with a first orbital launch targeted this year.

The month's biggest rounds, tenders & rumors

Defense, fintech, space, biotech, tunneling — all printing alongside the AI names. The AI-and-semis story is loud, but it isn't the only one.

What we're watching

Three questions we're carrying into August: whether the public chip sell-off is a durable re-rating or a leverage-driven reset that private infra marks shouldn't follow; whether open-weight momentum starts showing up as softer demand for the frontier labs; and whether the Robotics and CloudTech activity we're seeing in listed interest converts into pricing over the next few months.
